WordPress.com has limitations in advertising, installation of plugins and poor design. If you have decided to move out of WordPress.com to a self hosted WordPress site then this article is for you.
Before you move your blog’s post, pages and other details, you need to set up your self hosted site.
After having a domain and hosting site ready, you can start your migration work from WordPress.com to self hosted WordPress site. To start with, login to your WordPress.com account and from your dashboard click on “Tools” and then “export”. If you are not able to find it then you can see the option in our second print screen.
You will be displayed with two options i.e. free export and another one for a price. You are not required to select the payment option. Choose “export” as shown above to generate a file in XML.
To download the xml file select “all content” and click on download export file. Save the XML file in your PC.
Now login to your self hosted site. To move data to the present site click on “Tools” and then “Import”.
You will have many options to select from where you can import your generated file. We have to select the option “WordPress” from the list to import the earlier downloaded file.
If you are doing it for the first time then a window will pup up asking you to install importer. Click on “install now” button as shown below and wait till the installation over. After installation, it will ask you to choose option to activate. Now activate to import your earlier generated file.
In the next step it will ask you to upload the xml file. Now click on “choose file” and select your file to upload.
With this all content files from WordPress.com site will move to your self hosted WordPress site. Finally to get your old visitors to visit new blog or site you can select the redirect option to redirect them.
