Categories in WordPress define the structure of your site and make it easier for visitors to get to your content. If you have defined these categories properly in your WordPress site then a reader can easily browse through out your website by topic instead of going page by page to find relevant content.
Category in WordPress is also known as taxonomy, which main purpose is to improve usability of your site. With the changes in your site, you may require adding multiple categories or wants to rename existing categories based on your requirements. How to add categories in WordPress
Adding a new category to your WordPress site is very easy. You are just required to fill out the name, slug or url and a description to the category. If you want, you can assign parent category or else leave it as “none” to treat it as your main category in WordPress.
To get started select Posts > Categories in your WP dashboard. Enter name, slug and a description to your category and click on “Add New Category” to create it in your site. After creation you can see it getting added to your category list on the right hand side of your screen.

How to delete categories in WordPress
Being on the category screen from where you have created your new categories in WordPress, you can also use the delete option under the category to delete it.
To delete categories in WordPress, go to the category list on the right hand side of your screen and select delete option as shown below.
You can also select the bulk delete option from the top filter section to quickly delete more than one categories in WordPress.
If you are deleting a category in WordPress then make sure that you have marked proper redirection to it. If you are using custom permanent link structure then also make sure that it’s properly managed.
